In Call of Duty: Roman Wars you were able to play as a legion soldier
We all know that the first COD games took place in the WW2, but with Modern Warfare the game shifted to a modern set of wars and now, Call of Duty games take place in the future. But there was a time when the franchise was about to take place more than 2000 years ago and players would switch machine guns for swords.
Just after the release of Modern Warfare the developer started to search for new ideas in order to bring back freshness to the series while being creative. It was then when a prototype was created with the action taking place in the ancient Rome. The game was a mix between a FPS and an third person combat game.
In the prototype you controlled a legion soldier and like in Modern Warfare, you were able to take control of many characters and in the end you were even able to play as Julius Caesar. The prototype was very well received but was finally discarded because it was very different to past Call of Duty games.
